Memory spikes on the main server when running a NTA report or chart

Updated: September 19, 2016

Overview

Memory spikes on the main server when running a NTA report or chart. It goes from a small stable percentage of memory to 100%.

Environment

  • All versions of NTA

Cause

Issue is caused by the amount of data SolarWinds has to filter through in order to create the report, which is often based off a certain time frame. If your have GB worth of data, SolarWinds has to look at all that data and the date on each single piece in order to make the report.

Resolution

  1. Reduce the amount of data that is being collected.
    1. Reduce the retention period (Settings > NTA Settings > Retention period; default is 30 days).
    2. Reduce the number of devices sending Netflow data.
