Overview

When you attempt to install NTA 4.2.2 and later on an Additional Polling Engine, you may find that the installer detects an existing installation and prompts for a repair rather than continuing as an initial installation. Despite this, viewing the Programs & Features installed on that server shows no previous installation of NTA.

When trying to repair, the installation does not proceed. Canceling the repair also ends the installation attempt as expected. Thus, the installation is unable to continue.

Environment

  • All NTA 4.2.x versions, and possibly earlier.

Cause

This occurs when there is an old NTA evaluation or beta installation that was previously uninstalled or aborted. Upon viewing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Solarwinds.Net subkey, you may find further subkeys called Solarwinds 2002, Solarwinds 2003, or other indications of a previous installation. These subkeys were never removed.

Resolution

First, consider a fresh installation on a new Additional Polling Engine. SolarWinds Support can also attempt a cleanup of the installation and then an install of the NTA Collector if needed. Please contact SolarWinds Support for assistance, as advanced steps will need to be taken.
