NTA disconnecting from Flow Storage database

Updated July 21, 2017

Overview

This article addresses the issue where the event logs show the FSDB server disconnecting every minute. The NTA chart shows that data is still being collected and written, which suggests that the issue lies with intermittent connectivity.

The event logs indicate the following:

  • Connection to NTA Flow Storage Database has been lost. NTA cannot save any flows now.
  • Connection to NTA Flow Storage Database has been restored.

Errors:

[55] ERROR SolarWinds.Netflow.Processing.ScheduledTask - CheckFastbitInitialization threw an exception.

System.ServiceModel.EndpointNotFoundException: Could not connect to net.tcp://FSDB_IPAddress:17777/orion/nta/FlowStorageService. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:01.0312523. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it FSDB_IPAddress:17777.  ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it FSDB_IPAddress:17777

Environment

NTA 4.2

Cause

This implies an issue with the connection between NTA and the FSDB, usually due to full memory or a corrupt partition.

Resolution

Create a new location folder where the flow data will be saved.

  1. Go to the NTA FlowStorageDB server.
  2. Create a new location path to save the flow. The original path is:

C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\NTA\FlowStorage\Data.

  1. Run the NTA Flow Configurator and put it in the new location.
  2. Start the NTA Flow Storage service from services.msc.
  3. Start the NetFlow service on the main SolarWinds server using Orion Service Manager.

Alternative Solution:

Upgrade to NTA 4.4 or later where the Flow Storage Database is moved to SQL.
