Install NTA 4.0 evaluation with remote NTA Flow Storage: How to get the Orion database credentials in case of deadlock

Overview

This article provides brief information and steps to resolve the issue when you want to install TA 4.0 Evaluation with remote NTA Flow Storage, but cannot finish the configuration. NPM, NTA and NTA Flow Storage is installed on appropriate servers, but cannot complete their configurations.

Environment

All NTA versions

Cause

If you are installing a remote NTA Flow Storage, you need to have credentials to access the NPM Orion database. If your NPM uses a MS SQL Express database and you used the default SQL account and credentials, you do not know them and thus cannot use them for connecting NTA Flow Storage to the NPM database. The installation ends in a deadlock.

You probably have gone through the following steps that resulted in a deadlock:

  1. Install and configure NPM 10.6 with SQL Express. For more information, see Completing an Orion NPM Installation in the SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor Evaluation Guide.
  2. Install NTA 4.0 without the NTA Flow Storage.
  3. The Configuration Wizard asks for the NTA Flow Storage location.
  4. Go to the server where you want to have your NTA Flow Storage installed.
  5. Install NTA Flow Storage. The Configuration Wizard asks for Orion database credentials. You cannot provide them because you have installed an SQL Express database and do not know the default credentials.

Resolution

To resolve the situation:

  1. Log on to the server with NTA and uninstall NTA:
    1. Launch the Add or Remove Program tool in your Control Panel folder.
    2. Select SolarWinds Orion NetFlow Traffic Analyzer 4.0 and click Remove.
    3. Complete the wizard.

  2. Configure a new user account for the SQL database.
    1. If the Configuration Wizard does not launch automatically, start it in your SolarWinds Orion > Configuration and Auto-Discovery folder.
    2. Select that you want to modify Database and click Next.
    3. On the Database Settings screen select Use Windows Authentication, and click Next.
    4. Select Use an existing database on the next screen and click Next.
    5. Select Create a new account, define new credentials and note them.
    6. Complete the Configuration Wizard with default settings.

  3. If you are using SQL Express installed as a part of NPM Evaluation, configure it to allow remote connections. For detailed step-by-step instructions, see the article
  4. Log on to the server where you want to install NTA Flow Storage, install and configure it:
    1. Launch the executable.
    2. Select NTA Flow Storage only as the installation type.
    3. Use the SQL database details and credentials you have just defined to complete the configuration.

Note: If you are using SQL Express installed as a part of NPM Evaluation, make sure you specify not only the IP address, but also the instance name in the Orion Database Server field, such as 111.111.111.111\SOLARWINDS_ORION. The default instance name is SOLARWINDS_ORION.

  5. Return to the NTA server and install NTA 4.0 without the NTA Flow Storage:
    1. Launch the executable.
    2. Select NetFlow Traffic Analyzer 4.0 ONLY as the installation type.
    3. Use the NTA Flow Storage server name or IP address as the destination for storing flow data and complete the wizard.
