Syslog devices seem to stop sending events for long periods and then start sending again

Overview

There are instances where your networking device seem to have stopped sending all event data, but it would resume eventually.

Environment

  • All LEM versions
  • Firewall or router sending syslog events

Cause

The logging level on your device is set too low to capture normal traffic.  If the events eventually start being logged again after the idle period without intervention or without restarting any LEM services, then the most likely explanation is that the device is only sending sporadic events because the logging level is set too low.

Resolution

Set the logging level to INFO or WARNING. This provides useful data without flooding unnecessary events.
