Email templates allow you to create pre-formatted email messages that rules can use to notify you of an alert event. These templates become available in the Actions component list whenever you drag Send Email Message or Send Pager Message to the Actions box. You will be prompted to fill in the message variables from the Events or Event Groups lists.

You can create and manage templates in the Email Template form located in the Build >Groups view. Similar to rules, you can organize them into folders and add, edit, clone, and delete templates.

To configure email templates:

  1. Create the email template.
  2. Add your message parameters.
  3. Create the email template message.

Create the email template

Create email templates to report specific information about an alert event and variables that capture specific parameters about that event. For example, you can report which server is affected, what time the event occurred, or which agent was shut down.

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. In the Groups grid, click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/050/Button-Plus(Gray)_13x10.png and select Email Template.

The Email Template form displays. If you are editing an existing template, the form shows any parameters that are configured for the template.

  3. Click the Manager drop-down menu and select the manager that will host the template. If you are editing an existing template, this field displays the manager associated with the template.
  4. In the Name field, enter a name for the template. The name should describe the event that occurred or the destination of the email message.
  5. In the From field, enter who sent the message. For example, you can enter SolarWinds or Manager.
  6. In the Subject field, enter a subject for the message. The subject should indicate the nature of the alert event.
  7. Click Save to save the template.

Add your message parameters

In the Parameters list, add variables that provide placeholders for specific items within the message text. When the manager sends the message, it will complete the message by filling in the variable parameters with the appropriate text. You can add as many parameters as required.

For example, you may want a message to tell you which agent or server was affected or the time the event occurred. You can create a variable for agents, servers, or time. If you add too many or unnecessary parameters, you can easily delete the parameter you no longer need.

  1. In the Name field, enter the name of the parameter you want to capture in the email message.
  2. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/050/Button-Plus_16x15.png button to display the new parameter in the Parameters list.
  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for each parameter you want to capture in this message.
  4. Click Save to save your template changes.

Delete a message parameter

  1. In the Parameters list, select the parameter you want to delete.
  2. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/050/Button-Minus_18x15.png to delete the parameter.

The parameter is removed from the Parameters list.

  3. Click Save to save your changes.

Create the email template message

  1. In the Message box, type the email message that the manager sends when an event occurs.

  2. In the Parameters list, select and drag a parameter to the appropriate area in the message text. The parameters serve as placeholders for information that the Manager will fill in.
  3. Repeat Step 2 for each parameter.
  4. Click Save.

The new template appears in the Groups grid.

Manage email template folders

As with rules and state variables, you can use the Folders pane to organize your email templates into folders and sub-folders. You can add, rename, move, and delete template folders as needed.
