Configure groups

Updated November 30th, 2016

When required, you can add, edit, clone, import, export, or delete a group. You can also configure event groups that contain similar alerts that trigger the same response from the console. When you apply an event group to a rule, the console triggers the rule when an alert occurs within the group.

Add a new group

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. In the Groups grid, click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Plus(Gray)_15x12.png and select the group type you want to create.

The Group Details pane opens to display an editable form for your selected group type.

  3. In the Name box, enter a group name.
  4. In the Description box, enter a description of the group and its intended use.
  5. In the Manager list, select the manager where the group will reside.
  6. Complete the remaining form fields as required.
  7. Click Save.

The new group displays in the Groups grid.

Edit a group

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. Select a group to edit.
  3. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Gear_18x15.png and select Edit.

The Edit pane displays a form with the group configuration.

  4. Edit the form as required to reconfigure the group
  5. Click Save.

The revised group is applied to the manager and displays in the Groups grid.

Clone a group

When you clone a group, you copy an existing group and label it with a new name. This process allows you to create variations of existing groups to use with your rules, filters, and agents.

You can only clone groups for the same manager as the original group. You cannot clone a group and share it between managers.

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. In the Groups grid, select the group you want to clone.
  3. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Gear_18x15.png and select Clone.

The cloned group displays in the Groups grid below the original group.

A clone always uses the same name as the original group, followed by Clone. For example, a clone of the Disk Warning Group would be called Disk Warning Clone. A second clone would be called Disk Warning Clone 2, and so on.

  4. Rename and assign the group with new settings.

Import a group

You can import groups from a remote source into the Groups grid. You can export and then import a group from another manager or import a group provided by SolarWinds. You can only import one group at a time.

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Gear(Gray)_14x12.png on the Groups toolbar and select Import.
  3. Browse and select the group you want to import.

The group appears in the Groups grid and in the Group Details form for editing

  4. In the Group Details form, assign the group to a manager.
  5. Complete the remaining selections.
  6. Click Save to send the group to the manager.
  7. If you are working with email templates or state variables, drag the new group from the Groups grid into the folder (in the Folders pane) that stores the group.

Export a group

You can export a group to import to another manager or save a copy for an archive. If required by a SolarWinds technician for troubleshooting an issue, you can export a copy of your group to Technical Support. You can only export one group at a time.

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. In the Groups grid, select the group you want to export.
  3. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Gear_18x15.png next to the group and select Export.
  4. In the Save as window, select the folder that will store the exported group.
  5. In the File name field, type a name for the exported Group.
  6. Click Save,

You can now import the Group for use with another Manager.

Delete a group

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. In the Groups grid, select the Group you want to delete.
  3. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Gear_18x15.png next to the group and select Delete.
  4. When prompted, click Yes to confirm the delete.

The group is removed from the Groups grid.

Configure event groups

When you create or edit an event group, the Edit pane in the Build > Groups view opens and becomes the Event Group form. This form lets you create custom families of alerts you can save as a group and associate with your rules and filters.

For example, you can create an event group containing similar alerts that need to trigger the same response from the console. When you apply the event group to a rule, the console executes the rule when any alerts in the group occur.

Each event group you create only applies to the manager you select when you create the group. If you need a similar event group for a different manager, create it separately for the other manager.

  1. Open the Build > Groups view.
  2. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-Plus(Gray)_15x12.png on the Groups toolbar and select Event Group.

The Edit pane displays the Event Group form.

  3. Enter a name and description for the event group.
  4. Click the Manager drop-down list and select the manager that will host the group. If you are editing an existing group, this field displays the hosting manager.
  5. Click File:Success_Center/New_Articles/LEMUserGuide_MT/0B0/030/Button-AlertNodes_19x14.png and maximize the events lists.
