Configure Manager properties

Use the Properties pane to configure your managers. This pane stores the manager configuration settings, including the login options, agent licenses, and password settings. LEM uses the Properties pane for managers only, and is disabled for other types of appliances.

  1. Click Manage > Appliances.
  2. Select a manager in the Appliances grid.
  3. Complete the fields and selections in the Properties pane.
  4. Click Save.

    The Properties pane refreshes automatically when the manager is updated. This ensures that you are looking at the most current information.

Login tab

When the Login Automatically Next Time check box is selected, you can automatically connect to the manager when you open the console. If you manually log in to a manager from the Appliances grid, the system uses the tab settings to connect the manager to avoid entering the log in information in the login dialog box.

To configure the Login tab properties:

  1. Enter your user name and passwords in the appropriate fields.
  2. Select the appropriate check boxes.

    1. Select Login Automatically Next Time to automatically log in to the manager when you open the console. Clear this check box if you prefer to manually log in.
    2. Select Save Credentials to enable the console to save the manager user name and password locally. If the Login Automatically Next Time check box is selected, the console will automatically log on to the manager when the console is started. Otherwise, the console automatically provides the user name and password when you manually log on to the manager.
    3. Select the Reconnect on disconnection check box and a reconnect time value to enable the console to reconnect with the manager when the manager is disconnected for any reason.
    4. Select the timeout reconnection attempts after check box and an associated value to have the Console quit its reconnection attempts with the manager after a given number of tries, especially if the previous connection attempts were unsuccessful.
  3. Click Save.

License Tab

The License tab summarizes your available and allocated licenses and activates your SolarWinds LEM license.

The following table explains the License tab's remaining reference information.



Total Nodes

Displays the total number of nodes allowed by your SolarWinds LEM license.

Total Unused Nodes

Displays the number of unallocated nodes.

Total Agent Nodes

Displays the number of nodes allocated to LEM agent devices (such as workstations or servers).

Total Non-Agent Nodes

Displays the number of nodes allocated to non-agent devices (such as firewalls and switches).

Maintenance Expiration Date

Displays the date your current maintenance contract exwith SolarWinds Support expires.

License Recycling

Each time you create a VM desktop, an agent connects to LEM and allocates a license. This process repeats as you add and remove desktops. License recycling allows you to collect and reuse licenses from nodes that have not sent an event to the LEM manager within a specified amount of time.

To enable license recycling:

  1. Select the Enable license recycling check box.
  2. Select a defined time frame to recycle the license when a node has not sent an event.

  3. Select the time and day to check for recyclable licenses.

  4. Click the Nodes to check drop-down menu and select an option.

  5. Click Update License.

Settings Tab

The Settings tab defines the manager password policy settings and global automatic update settings. Global automatic updates allow the manager to automatically send software updates to agents as new software becomes available.

Use the following table to complete the Properties pane's Settings tab.

Password Policy

Minimum Password Length

Enter or select the minimum number of required password characters. Passwords must have at least six characters, but no more than 40 characters.

Must meet complexity requirements

Select this check box if passwords must meet the following complexity requirements:

  • Passwords must not match or contain part of the user's user name.
  • Passwords must be at least six characters long.
  • Passwords must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    • English uppercase characters (A through Z).
    • English lowercase characters (a through z).
    • Base 10 digits (0 through 9).
    • Non-alphanumeric characters (!, $, #, %, ^, etc.).

Remote Updates

Enable Global Automatic Updates

Select this check box to enable a manager to update its qualifying agents with the latest software updates. Clear this check box to disable this feature.

Each agent is also controlled by its Automatic Update settings on the Agents grid. The agent Automatic Updates setting is disabled if you select the Enable Global Automatic Updates check box.

Maximum Concurrent Updates

Select how many agents the manager can update at one time. The default value is 10.

If the number of agents that require updates is greater than the value you entered in this field, the remaining agents are queued for updates when an update slot is available.

Explorer Command Agent

Current Default Agent

Select the default agent for performing SolarWinds explorer functions, such as NSLookup and Whois. For best results, choose an agent that is normally online and will return the expected results.

Connection Requests


Set the value for the amount of time before a timeout request is initiated.

Seconds Set the value for the amount of time before a timeout request is initiated.

SolarWinds Improvement Program

Email Address Enter your email address.
Send usage statistics to SolarWinds to help us improve our products Select this check box to send statistics to SolarWinds.

Threat Intelligence

Allow LEM to detect threats based on list of bad IP addresses This check box is active by default. Threat intelligence identifies events as threats by matching event IP information against a list of known bad IP addresses.

Only administrators have the permissions enable or disable the threat intelligence feed. Disabling and reenabling the threat intelligence feed forces a threat intelligence update and creates an InternalAudit event. Restarting LEM also forces the threat intelligence feed to update.
