An error occurred when attempting to retrieve the virtual hard disk

Updated July 27th, 2016

Overview

This article describes and issue with deploying LEM on Hyper-V where the below error is generated.

An error occurred when attempting to retrieve the virtual hard disk <Filepath>\SolarWinds-LEM-6.2.1.vhd on server <Hyper-VHostname>

Environment

  • LEM 6.2.1
  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core

Cause

There are files missing from the deployment of the LEM VM to Hyper-V

Resolution

  1. Download the Hyper-V version of LEM from your Customer Portal.
  2. Extract and deploy the folders to the storage accessible from the Hyper-V host:
    • Snapshots
    • Virtual Hard Disks
    • Virtual Machines
    • Virtual Machines 2012 R2
  3. Deploy the LEM VM into Hyper-V again, duplicating all files. The error should no longer persist.
