Unable to open the UDP/TCP socket on port

Updated March 11th, 2016

Overview

The following error is displayed in Kiwi Syslog:

Unable to open UDP/TCP socket on port <number>

Environment

All Kiwi Syslog versions

Cause

This error occurs when another application or service is using the port that Kiwi Syslog listens on. By default, Kiwi Syslog listens on port 514. Only a single process can bind to a particular port at any one time.

Resolution

  1. Go to Start > Run and enter cmd.
  2. Enter netstat -aon.
  3. Check for any process identifier numbers (PID) bound to port 514.
  4. In your Task Manager, identify the process that corresponds to the PID.
Note: Verify that you have set your Task Manager to include the PID. Refer to Include the Process ID Column on the Task Manager's Processes Tab. (© 2017 Microsoft , available at https://technet.microsoft.com, obtained on March 8, 2017).
  5. End the process that is bound to port 514.
  6. Restart the Kiwi Syslog daemon.
