WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

FormatMessage failed with error 1815

Updated May 4th, 2016

Overview

This article describes an issue regarding receiving the following prompt when using SolarWinds Log Forwarder and displaying the correct information:

FormatMessage failed with error 1815 using Solarwinds log forwarder.

Environment

Log Forwarder version 1.1.2

Cause

This is a locale related issue. Log Forwarder is receiving the wrong Language ID from the operating system, and that prevents Log Forwarder from decoding the event from Event log. The permanent solution is to configure the Local Language ID.

Resolution

Note:  A workaround for this error is also available by downloading and installing Log Forwarder version 1.1.19
Log Forwarder version 1.1.19 download link

To configure the Local Language for non-Unicode programs on your system

  1. Start > Run > intl.cpl >Administrative tab.
  2. Change system locale > change "Current system locale" to "English (United States)".
