Overview

The following error appears when connecting to a remote device:

Failed to determine hostname, no cr or lf

Environment

Kiwi CatTools v3.4 to v3.10

Cause 

This is caused by a timing issue and also sometimes if the device has a Banner that uses #### (hashtags) as a frame. The # symbol is often used as the privileged prompt. and can cause an issue for CatTools.

Resolution

  1. Remove the ### from the banner if they exist and do some tests.  Alternatively, you can hard-set the prompts within the CatTools device.  Here's how:
    1. Edit the Device within CatTools.
    2. Go to the "Variations" tab.
    3. Click "Use Variations"
    4. Click the "Full Prompts" tab.
    5. Check the boxes for Enable Prompt, VTY Prompt and Config prompt.
    6. Populate these fields with the prompt when in Enable mode, Standard Mode or Config Mode respectively.
    7. Click "Save" and "Ok".

 

  1. If this is part of an activity involving numerous devices, then try splitting the activity into a number of smaller activities.
