Website configuration failed: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation

Updated July 10, 2017

Overview

The following error is displayed in the configuration wizard when upgrading from IPAM 4.3.2 to 4.5.0:

Website configuration failed:

Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

Environment

  • IPAM 4.3.2
  • IPAM 4.5.0
  • NPM 12.1

Cause

The following log error indicates that an earlier IPAM version is still installed:

ERROR ConfigurationProgressScene - Exception while configuring plugins.
System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Common.ModulesCollector' threw an exception. ---> System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\IPAM\SolarWinds.IPAM.Strings.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Resolution

  1. Remove earlier versions of IPAM that are still installed.
  2. Remove the backup file C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Modules\ipam.xml. if it exists in that directory.
  3. Install IPAM 4.5.0 or higher.
  4. Run the configuration wizard.

Note: In some cases, it is necessary to check in C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Information Service\3.0\Schemas\ for a backup XML file.
