The DNS zone transfer of '12345.xxxxxa' started at 12:00 has failed with error: 'Insufficient read access privilege to configuration file: '/var/named/named.loopback'.'

Overview

Unable to poll BIND DNS zones from the Linux server. Process takes very long and never finishes. The DNS zone transfer fails with the error:

The DNS zone transfer of '12345.xxxxxa' started at 12:00 has failed with error: 'Insufficient read access privilege to configuration file: '/var/named/named.loopback'.'.

Environment

All versions of IPAM

Resolution

To rebuild the DNS zones with root privileges:

  1. Open cmd.
  2. Enter the command:
     yum install bind-chroot –y

For the manual process to rebuild the DNS zones with root privileges, refer to the Linux Documentation Project website.

Cause

When users create BIND DNS in the Linux server folder, the folder becomes isolated (jail). All content including DNS zones are also isolated. Users without root privileges cannot poll records over SSH (22), and will not be able to view or edit zones in the Web Console.
