DNS zones are not being transferred to the IPAM server

Updated November 9, 2016

Overview

This article pertains to an issue that can cause the DNS Zone Transfers in IPAM to no longer occur.  In such a scenario,  you will find the following entries occurring for all your DNS zones within the SolarWinds.IPAM.Job logs:

2016-08-08 11:56:23,460 [205] ERROR SolarWinds.IPAM.DNS.DnsServerManagement - Message From Code :Unable to enable zone transfer for zone 'zonename' for 'X.X.X.X''.

Environment

  • IPAM v3.0 and later
  • Windows DNS servers

Cause

The IPAM server cannot properly reach the DNS server assigned. When IPAM is attempting to authenticate to the DNS server to conduct the zone transfer, it takes the name of the DNS server and attempts to issue a reverse lookup of its hostname in the database. If that reverse lookup is incorrect, missing or corrupt, then it cannot properly connect to the DNS server for the transfer.

Resolution

  1. Conduct a reverse and forward lookup of the DNS server from the IPAM server.
  2. Verify if it is set correctly.
  3. If it is not, correct the entries in DNS.
  4. Create a host record entry if unable to correct the DNS entries.
