Upgrade SolarWinds when FOE is installed on the Primary and Additional Poller Quick Path

Overview

In this article, you will learn a quick way to upgrade your Orion server and modules including when you have Additional polling engine installed within the environment this guide will cover the both in a quick way upgrade through command line making the server active / passive without running the FOE application. 

 

 

Environment

  • All NPM versions
  • All SAM versions
  • All FOE versions

Steps

  1.  
    1. Make sure you have Illo / Console access to all of your servers (Primary / Secondary ) 
    2. Stop all Orion Services on both servers.
  2. On the Primary Poller:
    1. Shut down all the FoE services (through FOE manager on both primary & secondary servers).
  3. Make Secondary Server Active.
  4. Primary  Poller: (To make the Secondary Server Active you need to start from the Primary).
    1. Log in to this box with the CONSOLE access (not the RDP session).
    2. Shutdown the FOE services (through FOE Manager).
    3. Shutdown all the Orion services (through Orion service Manager).
    4. Now open the command prompt  Start – run – cmd. 
    5. Cd C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin.
    6. C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin> nfpktfltr.exe setstate filter.
      Note: The above command will hide the ip address of the Primary box from the network.
  5. On the Secondary Poller:
    1. Log in to this box with the CONSOLE access (not the RDP session).
    2. Now open the command prompt  Start – run – cmd.
    3. Cd C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin.
    4. C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin> nfpktfltr.exe setstate passthru.
      Note: The above command will UN- hide the ip address of the Secondary  box from the network and you can easily perform the upgrade of  the modules on the Primary box from the step 5).
  6.  
    1. Start First Upgrade Module first from Secondary Poller 
      1. Start the upgrade process on the Secondary Poller which you made active. 
    2. Upgrade Example 
      1. Example: NPM 10.6 ⇒ Orion NPM 10.7.x 
      2. Once first module upgraded successfully on the Secondary  Box , now shutdown all the Orion services via Orion service Manager.
      3. Now go back to the command prompt and run this command
      4. C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin> nfpktfltr.exe setstate filter
      5. (the above command will HIDE the ip address of the secondary  again)
  7. Upgrade Primary Poller:
    1. Now you are going to upgrade the same module on the primary poller as you did on the secondary poller. 
    2. Now go back to the command prompt and run this command.
    3. C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\FoE\R2\bin> nfpktfltr.exe setstate passthru.
      Note: The above command will UN-HIDE the ip address of the Primary  again.
  8.  
    1. Repeat the steps above for each module Upgrade making Primary and Secondary active.
  9.  On the Primary Poller:
    1. Start all the FOE services.
    2. Let the sync complete.
       

Additional Poller Upgrade

You can simply Make Secondary Additional Poller Active by using the same above steps you just performed above .

  1. PRIMARY BOX (Additional Poller ) :
  2. Start all the FOE services.
  3. Let the sync complete.
