FOE encounters issues when SolarWinds HA service automatically starts

Updated: 2-9-2017

Overview

SolarWinds products using Orion Platform 2016.2 or later includes a SolarWinds High Availability service. When you upgrade products with Orion Platform 2016.2 or later in an FOE active environment, the SolarWinds HighAvailability service may cause issues with FOE. The FOE service may go passive, disable the network, or encounter further issues. This occurs because the active FOE server has a startuptype set to automatic, which starts the Orion service including the SolarWinds HighAvailability service.

To resolve, manually disable the SolarWinds HighAvailability service through the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on the FOE primary and secondary servers.

This issue occurs even if you do not have SolarWinds High Availability pools enabled or created. The automatic startuptype causes the issue.

Environment

  • FailOver Engine (FOE)
  • SolarWinds High Availability
  • Orion Platform 2016.2 and later (products include NPM 12.0.1 and later, SAM 6.3 and later, etc.)

Cause

The SolarWinds HighAvailability service may startup on FOE active and passive servers causing issues. The FOE service may go passive, disable the network, and encounter further issues. This occurs due to the active FOE server having a startuptype set to automatic, which starts the Orion service including the SolarWinds HighAvailability service.

Resolution

Complete the following on the primary and secondary FOE servers.

  1. Login with administrator credentials to the FOE server.
  2. Open the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To open, click Windows, select Run, and enter services.msc.
  3. Locate and select the SolarWinds HighAvailability service.
  4. Right-click on the service and select Properties.
  5. In the General tab, in the Startup Type select Disabled.
  6. Close to save changes.
