Updated May 12, 2017

Overview

This article addresses the issue where the FoE installation fails with the following error messages when restoring the Windows backup to the secondary FoE server:

Copy of the files failed.

Access is denied.

An exception occurred:

Message: Execution failed with return code -3. Restore was aborted.

The process encountered errors and could not complete successfully.
Please click Exit. Alternatively, click Back, followed by Next to repeat the process.

The following error is found in the log file:

Error Restoring C:\ during write: Error [0x80070005] Access is denied

Environment

FOE 6.0 and later

Cause

This can occur because of permission issues on the file, system, UAC, AV, or others.

See the following for other vendor issues when using the same technique to restore Windows backup:

Resolution

  1. Use the Windows server Backup and Restore feature directly on the system.

  2. Rerun the FoE installer and use the pre-cloned option to skip the restore backup.
  3. Pre-clone a cloned image of the primary server. This image will be used as the secondary server. This clone may be a VMWare clone or similar technology. See the Orion Failover Installation Walkthrough for more information.

If you encounter issues with restoring the Windows backup using the Backup and Restore feature, contact the Windows System team for assistance.
