Supports: SolarWinds EOC 2.0

The following sections list minimum software requirements and recommendations for a SolarWinds EOC installation.

For information about installing EOC 2.0, see the SolarWinds Orion Installer for EOC

  • SolarWinds does not support installing SolarWinds products on domain controllers.
  • SolarWinds neither recommends nor supports the installation of any Orion product on the same server or using the same database server as a Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry server.

EOC server requirements

Software

Software Requirements

Operating system

Production Evaluation Environments Only
  • Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows 8.1 (not Standard Edition)
  • Windows 10

Installing SolarWinds EOC on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Core is not supported.

Operating system languages

  • English (UK or US)
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Simplified Chinese

IP address version

  • IPv4
  • IPv6 implemented as a dual stack

CIDR notation is not supported for IPv6 addresses.

Web server

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), version 7.5 or later

IIS is installed by the SolarWinds installer. You can install this software manually to reduce your installation time or network bandwidth.

.NET Framework

.NET 4.6.2

Run the same version of. NET on your primary server and any Additional Web Servers in the environment.

Web console browser

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 11 or later with Active scripting
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Firefox 49.0 or later
  • Chrome 54.0 or later
  • Do not enable Enterprise Mode on Internet Explorer. This setting forces Internet Explorer to emulate version 7, which is not supported.
  • Due to issues with memory usage and Windows authentication, Internet Explorer is not a recommended browser.

Hardware

The following requirements are for an EOC server with MS SQL Express 2016 installed as the EOC database.

Optionally, you can install a Standard or Enterprise edition database on a separate server. See Options for the EOC database.

Hardware < 15 remote sites > 15 remote sites
CPU Quad core processor or better Quad core processor or better

Options for the EOC database

Unlike other Orion Platform products, you can run EOC 2.0 in a production environment with a SQL Express database installed on the same server. A SQL Express database is sufficient because EOC stores minimal data. For example, the EOC database stores site registrations, user accounts, custom Enterprise Summary Tile definitions, and reports.

Optionally, you can choose to install a Standard or Enterprise edition of SQL Server on a different server. If you choose that option, see the database requirements

(Optional) Orion SQL database requirements

If you choose to install the Orion database on a separate server, the following hardware and software requirements apply.

Software

SQL Server

SolarWinds EOC supports Standard or Enterprise editions of the following SQL Server versions:

  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Server 2012 SP1
  • SQL Server 2012 SP2
  • SQL Server 2012 SP3
  • SQL Server 2014
  • SQL Server 2014 SP1
  • SQL Server 2014 SP2
  • SQL Server 2016
  • SQL Server 2016 SP1
  • SQL Server 2017
SQL Server Collation
  • English with collation setting SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_ CI_AS
  • German with collation setting German_PhoneBook_CI_AS
  • Japanese with collation setting Japanese_CI_AS
  • Simplified Chinese with collation setting Chinese_PRC_ CI_AS

Notes:

  • We support CI database on a CS SQL Server.
  • We do not support case-sensitive databases.
Recovery mode SolarWinds recommends Simple Database Recovery Mode to ensure best performance
Authentication Either mixed-mode or SQL authentication must be supported
Other software

If you are managing your SolarWinds Orion database, SolarWinds recommends you install the SQL Server Management Studio component.

The Installation Wizard installs the following required x86 components if they are not found on your Orion database server:

  • SQL Server System Common Language Runtime (CLR) Types
Orion products use secure SQL CLR stored procedures for selected, non-business data operations to improve overall performance.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
  • Microsoft SQL Server Management Objects

Hardware

CPU Quad core processor or better
OS type 64 bit
Hard drive space

40 GB recommended

Memory

Server port requirements

Port Protocol Service or Process Direction Component Encryption Description
80 TCP IIS (w3wp.exe) Bidirectional Website No HTTP default for the Orion Web Console
443 TCP IIS (w3wp.exe) Bidirectional Website SSL/TLS 1.2 HTTPS default for the Orion Web Console
17777 TCP SolarWinds Information Service Bidirectional SWIS Certificate (SHA-512) Used for the SolarWinds Information Service (SWIS) protocol

Network and scalability

Scalability With the system requirements outlined above, EOC 2.0 was successfully tested with 30 SolarWinds Sites with a total of 1 million elements (nodes, interfaces, and volumes).
Connectivity Multiple EOC servers can be connected to the same SolarWinds Site.
Latency

SolarWinds recommends that latency between the EOC server and connected SolarWinds Sites be less than 200 ms (both ways). EOC can function at higher latencies, but performance might be affected.

EOC was tested with up to 500 ms of latency and remained functional, but performance (specifically with reports) was affected.
