Access Violation Application name : {name}.exe Fault Module name : mswsock.dll


This article provides brief information on why some Engineer's Toolset tools may not be launching as well as steps to resolve this issue.  


All versions of Engineer's Toolset for Desktop


Some of the Engineer's Desktop Toolset tools fail to start. For example, MIB Walk fails with the error message: 

Access Violation 
Application name : MIBWalk.exe
Fault Module name : mswsock.dll  


In this example, the MIB Walk tool halts mswsock.dll from initializing. This can happen for Windows 2008 R2 via a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) session.


Create a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) exception for the executable that is failing to start, such as MIBWalk.exe. To add an exception to DEP:

  1. Open Control Panel and select System.
  2. In the Advanced tab, click Settings in the Performance section.
  3. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
  4. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
  5. Click Add and select the executable that is failing to start.

    The default location for Engineer's Toolset executables is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Toolset

  6. Click OK.
