Switch to DB2 instance-wide monitoring

DPA 9.0 and later and Ignite 8.3.2 and later support instance-wide monitoring for DB2. If you are currently monitoring multiple DB2 databases on the same instance, this article explains how you can configure DPA to monitor all databases using a single monitor.

Instance-Wide Monitoring Features

When DPA is configured to monitor an entire DB2 instance with a single monitor, DPA will:

  • Monitor wait time and other metrics across all databases in the instance.
  • Monitor statistics for all active databases.  When databases are set in DB2 to deactivate when there are no connections, statistics may be affected.  See this knowledge base article for more information.
  • Show a Database tab to show the wait time breakdown by database.  You can also drill into a specific database to see wait time for just that database.

DB2 Support Options

The following support options are available on the Options > Advanced Options page. These options dictate the monitoring behavior of existing and future DB2 monitoring:

  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB_DEFAULT (default = false)
    • This option is a "repository" support option that determines how all new DB2 instances will be monitored.
      • If this value is set to "true", then all new registered DB2 instances will only monitor the database that is specified in the "Register Instance" wizard.
      • If this value is set to "false", then all new registered DB2 instances will monitor all databases in the instance regardless of the database specified in the "Register Instance" wizard.
    • This option can be changed as often as you like and will not affect DB2 databases or instances that have already been registered in DPA.
  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB (default = false)
    • This option is a "monitored database instance" support option that determines how an currently-registered DB2 instances will be monitored.
      • If this value is set to "true", then DPA will only monitor the database that was specified in the "Register Instance" wizard.
      • If this value is set to "false", then DPA will monitor all databases in the instance, regardless of the database specified in the "Register Instance" wizard.

Upgrades

When you upgrade from a version earlier than Ignite 8.3.200, the upgrade process determines whether DPA is currently monitoring any DB2 databases and sets the new DB2 options accordingly:

If at least 1 DB2 database is currently registered:

  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB_DEFAULT = true
  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB = true

This means that all future and all existing DB2 instances will monitor a single database, so DPA has the same behavior you have come to expect.

If no DB2 databases are currently registered:

  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB_DEFAULT = false
  • DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB = false

This means that all future registrations will monitor all databases in the DB2 instance.

New Installs

When installing a new version of DPA, the DB2 options both default to false, all future DB2 instances will monitor all databases.

Converting single-database monitoring to instance-wide monitoring

If you are currently monitoring one or more DB2 databases and you would like to switch DPA to monitor the instance, follow the steps below.

You first need to decide whether you want to register a new DB2 instance monitor or use an existing one. We recommend registering a new instance because using an existing one will mix historical data for a single database with data from all databases in the instance.

  1. Stop all of the current DB2 monitors.
  2. Click "Options", "Administration", "Advanced Options", and select the "Support Options" box. Next, search for "DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB_DEFAULT" and change the value to "false".
  3. We recommend registering a new instance for your instance wide monitoring rather than using an existing monitored instance as the historical data for the single database will be mixed with data from all databases once it is converted. However, the choice is up to you.
    • If you would like to convert an existing DB2 monitored instance from single database monitoring to instance wide monitoring, click "Options", "Administration", "Advanced Options", select the "Support Options" box, then choose the database you would like to convert in the "Monitored Database Instance Options" drop down. Next, search for the "DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB" database option and change the value to "false".
    • If you are going to create a new DB2 monitored instance for instance wide monitoring, you simply need to register a new DB2 instance in DPA. By changing the DB2_MONITOR_SINGLE_DB_DEFAULT property to false in step 2, all new DB2 databases will use instance wide monitoring.
