Unable to show execution plan on SQL server instance

Updated: November 7, 2016

Overview

When clicking into the plan tab in DPA for SQL server instance you are monitoring, no plans are display and collected.

Environment

  • All versions of DPA
  • Monitoring SQL server 2014 prior to CU 1

Cause

A bug in Microsoft SQL Server 2014 causes the DMV sys.dm_exec_requests to have a NULL value in the query_hash.

Because of this, DPA is unable to link the Plans to the queries.

User will see something like the image below:

this was patched in this bug fix release

"FIX: The values of column query_hash and query_plan_hash are NULL for DMV sys.dm_exec_requests in SQL Server 2014 "

Resolution

Patch the SQL server that is being monitored to allow DPA to not have nulls in this dmv.
