DPA shows a blank hostname, database name, or program name

Updated February 13, 2018

When you drill in to a Microsoft SQL Server database instance, DPA displays No Host Name, No Program Name, or No Database.

  • DPA, all versions

This happens because a third-party application is not reporting this data to SQL Server.

DPA polls this data directly from Microsoft SQL Server upon Quick Poll. To find out which application is not returning data:

  1. Run the following query to execute the stored procedure:
  2. Run this query:
    select login_name,program_name,host_name from sys.dm_exec_sessions
  3. Use SQL Activity Monitor > Processes.
  4. You can filter the application column and click the dropdown to look for blank records.
  5. If you find blank records, contact the application owner to ask why the application is not registering details to SQL Server.
