Overview

DPA collects SQL Server plans and displays them in graphical format, similar to the way SQL Server Management Studio does.  Sometimes, however, DPA does not display the plan and instead shows this message:

Graphical SQL plan could not be displayed

This article explains why DPA displays the message above.

Environment

DPA, all versions

Details

The SQL Server plan is actually an XML file, and DPA gives you the ability to download the plan XML file to your computer with a .sqlplan extension. If you open up the plan XML file, you will see that it contains a <statements> node, and beneath it you will see one of the following nodes:

  • <StmtSimple>          <=== DPA displays plans for this statement type
  • <StmtCursor>
  • <StmtCond>
  • <StmtCursor>
  • <StmtReceive>
  • <StmtUseDb>

DPA supports only StmtSimple. DPA displays the message above for all other statement types. To see the plan, download the plan file and open it in SQL Server Management Studio.
