As of version 8.2, Ignite collects SQL Server plans and displays them in graphical format, similar to the way SQL Server Management Studio does.  Sometimes, however, Ignite will not display the plan and instead shows this message:

Graphical SQL plan could not be displayed

This article explains why Ignite displays the above message.

The SQL Server plan is actually an XML file, and Ignite gives you the ability to download the plan XML file to your computer with a .sqlplan extension.  If you open up the plan XML file, you will see that it contains a <statements> node, and beneath it you will see one of the following nodes:

  • <StmtSimple>          <=== Ignite displays plans for this statement type
  • <StmtCursor>
  • <StmtCond>
  • <StmtCursor>
  • <StmtReceive>
  • <StmtUseDb>

Ignite only supports StmtSimple.  Ignite will display the above message for all other statement types.  To see the plan, download the plan file and open it in SQL Server Management Studio.
