How to Integrate DPA and Server & Application Monitor - Video

This video shows you how to integrate Database Performance Analyzer with Server and Application Monitor.

Lets start the integration.

From within Server & Application Monitor, or SAM for short, click on the Settings link in the menu bar and choose 'All Settings.'

Find the 'Product Specific Setting' section and click 'Database Performance Analyzer'.

Click 'Manage DPA Servers.'

Click 'Add DPA Server.'

Enter the name or IP address of the DPA server.

Enter the port number if you have altered the default DPA ports.

Enter the DPA administrative user and password.

Test your connection. If the connection fails, try using IP addresses for the DPA and Orion servers.

Once you have successfully tested the connection, click 'Integrate.' In the background, the program is building accounts between DPA and SAM, and automatically creating relationships for databases monitored by both SAM and DPA.

Once the integration is complete click 'Go To Databases Summary'.

The 'Databases Summary' view provides you with health and status summaries of all your databases monitored by DPA and SAM, as well as DPA specific views showing the performance analysis of your queries and databases. You can also access the 'Database Summary' view from the menu bar under 'My Dashboards' and then 'Databases.'

Also, if you go to the 'Appstack Environment' view, by clicking 'My Dashboards' and then 'Environment,' you will see that the 'Database Instance' layer is now showing your database instances with status.

Your integration is now complete, but to maximize the value of the integration between DPA and SAM, we suggest mapping the applications you are monitoring with SAM to the databases that DPA is monitoring. By creating this relationship, you will see query performance data side-by-side with your application performance data. This will simplify solving complex application-database performance problems.

From the 'Databases Summary' view, click 'Configure Client Application' in the 'Applications Using My Databases' resource.

The easiest way to create relationships between applications and databases is to click the 'Find New Relationships'.

A discovery will quickly build a list of potential relationships and allow you to select the ones you want to create. Simply click the check boxes andthen 'Save Relationships.'

If no relationships are discovered, click 'Define New Relationships' and follow the instructions in the wizard.

Once you have saved some relationships, additional features of the integration will be available:

On the 'Databases Summary' view, 'Applications Using My Databases' lists all the applications that are mapped to your databases. By combining applications status with database performance indicators, you can quickly drill down to any trouble spot.

Also, if you drill down to the application, a 'Database Response Time (Client)' resource appears on the top right of the view, highlighting the query performance of the databases accessed by that application.

Finally, the relationships you've defined are also active in the Appstack Environment view, allowing you to drill down on an application and see which databases it is accessing.

Now that you have integrated DPA and SAM and have mapped some applications to the databases they are accessing, you can quickly see if an application performance problem is related to the performance of queries or the database instances.
