Convert DPA from subscription mode to BYOL (Bring Your Own License)

Updated August 15, 2017

Overview

DPA can use either of the following modes to determine licensing requirements:

  • Subscription mode can be used by customers who deploy DPA on an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). DPA reports the number of database instances being monitored to the Amazon Metering Service.
  • BYOL (bring your own license) mode is the traditional licensing mode, which is used for all other deployment options (including manually installing DPA on a VM in Amazon EC2). Customers purchase DPA licenses and apply the license keys.

When you deploy DPA on an AMI, DPA runs in subscription mode by default. The following sections provide instructions for:

  • Changing to BYOL mode while DPA is deployed on an AMI
  • Moving DPA from an AMI to another server and (optionally) migrating the repository database

Environment

  • DPA 11.1 and later

Steps

Changing to BYOL mode while DPA is deployed on an AMI

Complete the following steps if you want to leave DPA on an AMI, but use BYOL licensing mode.

  1. Stop DPA:
    • On Windows, stop the Ignite PI Server service.
    • On UNIX or Linux, run the shutdown.sh script.
  2. Open the following file in a text editor:
    <DPA_HOME>/iwc/tomcat/ignite_config/idc/system.properties
  3. Update the value of the following property:
    com.confio.cloud.subscription.license=false
  4. Start DPA:
    • On Windows, restart the Ignite PI Server service (if it is a Windows machine) or running the startup.sh script (if it is a UNIX/Linux machine).
    • On UNIX or Linux, run the startup.sh script.
See the readme.txt file in the top directory of the DPA installation if you need more information.
  5. Apply licenses obtained from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

Moving DPA from an AMI to another server

Complete the following steps if you want to move DPA from an AMI to another server (for example, an on-premises server).

  1. Stop DPA:
    • On Windows, stop the Ignite PI Server service.
    • On UNIX or Linux, run the shutdown.sh script.
  2. Install DPA on the new server using the DPA installer.
  3. Copy the repo.properties file from the <DPA_HOME>\iwc\tomcat\ignite_config\idc directory on the original DPA installation to the same directory on the new server.
  4. If you have changed the default values for system or server properties, edit the following files on the new server to preserve your changes:
    • server.properties
    • system.properties
  6. Apply licenses obtained from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.
  7. (Optional) If you want to migrate repository, follow the instructions for your repository type:
  8. Update parameters in the <DPA_HOME>\iwc\tomcat\ignite_config\idc\repo.properties file to reflect the connection string of the migrated repository.
