Overview

This article details how to restore or migrate the Saved Host List from one machine to another.

Environment

All DameWare Mini Remote Control versions

Steps

Version 11.2.0 and later

  • In older versions of MRC, moving the Saved Host Lists to other computers do not include passwords. Starting version 11.2.0, transfer of Saved Host List to another machine or computer is possible.
  • Running version 11.2.0 or later converts existing Saved Host List information from the old MRC.dbf database file to the new version 11.2.0 Saved Host List database file.
  • The MRCCv2.db file saved in
    • C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\DameWare Development\MRCCv2.db
  • The passwords stored in the Registry are found in the following location:
    • [[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DameWare Development\Mini Remote Control\Data\]
    • NOTE: The Registry above only stores passwords.

The following are the two ways to move and restore the Saved Host list to another computer:

Option 1:

C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\DameWare Development\MRCCv2.db

[[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DameWare Development\Mini Remote Control\Data\]

  1. Manually move the Saved Host List data.
  2. Copy the DB file from the following location:
  3. Export the password section of the following Registry.
  4. Copy the DB file to the target computer.
  5. Import the Registry file to the target machine.

Option 2:

  1. From the View menu of the MRC console, click Default Host Properties.
  2. Select the Authentication Options tab and click the Storage Options button.
  3. Check the Store Credentials in Database box, and then click OK.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 on the target computer.
  5. Copy the DB file to the target computer.

Version 4.4 and later (Including all 5.x and 6.x)

  • Running version 7.x or later converts the existing Saved Host List information from the old MRC.dbf database file to the new version 7 Saved Host List database file. This file is called MRCCv2.db
  • The database path for the files is determined by using "opment" at the end. The following are examples of database paths:
    • C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\DameWare Development
    • C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\DameWare Development
    • C:\Documents and Settings\{UserName}\Application Data\DameWare Development
      • Vista, Windows 7, and 2008:
      • Windows
      • Windows 2000, XP and 2003:
    • NOTE: Windows 2000 and later only supports DMRC v7.x and later. However, the MRC Client Agents are still supported on Windows 9.x and later.

Version 4.4 and later (Including all 5.x and 6.x)

  • Running DameWare Mini Remote Control (DMRC) v4.4 or later converts the existing Saved Host List information from the Registry to a DMRC database file.
  • The MRC.db (v4.4) or MRC.dbf (v4.5 or later) contains all DMRC Saved Host List entries and settings.
  • The following are the database file paths using internal system variable CSIDL_APPDATA and appending it with \DameWare Development at the end:
    • C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\DameWare Development
    • C:\Documents and Settings\{UserName}\Application Data\DameWare Development
  • Located in the Profile Directory.
    • Vista, Windows 7, and 2008:
    • Windows 2000/XP/2003:
    • NT4:
  • The Application path is used when the Operating System does not support the system variable.
    • Application paths are the installation folders.
    • Files can also be found using the Search function.
  • Transferring the Saved Host List for v 4.4 requires a user to back up the DMRC database files from the DameWare Development installation folder, and then restore them to the proper path on the remote machine.
    • NOTE:
      • The software rebuilds entries from the information left in the Registry if the database files are not restored to the proper directory of the remote machine.
      • For security reasons, beginning in version 4.0 and above, DameWare Development uses Microsoft's Security APIs to Encrypt and store the credentials associated with each individual Host Entry. These credentials are no longer stored along with the rest of the Host Entry information, and therefore not
      • included within either method of exporting (i.e. Registry Key or Database). Unfortunately, any credentials associated with specific Host Entries must be manually retyped into the software.

Versions 4.4 and earlier (Including all 3.x)

  • The following Dameware Registry key can be exported into .REG file, and then imported to a new computer once the host list has been created:
    • [[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DameWare Development\NT Utilities\DNTU\DWRCC Settings]
