Cannot connect to the DameWare Central Server with an IPv6 address

Overview

When you enter a valid IPv6 address, a server connection error similar to the following displays:

Dameware Central Server was not found on specified location. Please try different 
server connection details or contact your administrator.

Environment

  • DameWare Remote Support
  • DameWare Mini Remote Control version 11.0 and later

Resolution

Use one of the following options to resolve the issue:

  • Connect using the hostname instead of the IP address.
  • Create an entry for the Central Server in your host file.

Create a Central Server entry in your host file

  1. Log in to the DameWare server.
  2. Open Notepad with administrative privileges.
  3. Navigate to:
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  4. Open the host file with Notepad.
  5. Add the following entry to the host file:
    IPv6address hostname
    where IPv6address is the address of the DameWare Central Server and hostname is the name that you want to use to connect to the Central Server. The hostname should not be registered to other computers in your network.
  6. Save the host file.
  7. Use the hostname you created in the host file to connect to the DameWare Central Server.
