Install Dameware Remote Support in centralized mode

Dameware Remote Support is a remote control and remote access tool that makes connections to the end users' computer through the Dameware Central Server. This article provides system requirements and steps for installing Dameware Remote Support in centralized mode. When you use Dameware Remote Support in centralized mode, you can centrally manage Dameware users, share global host lists, and make connections outside your firewall.

Before you begin, ensure that:

  • You have installed the Dameware Central Server in express mode, two-server mode, or three-server mode. When you install Dameware Remote Support, you configure it to connect with the Central Server.
  • You have a copy of the DamewareRS.exe installation file.

The APIs used by Remote Support may require the Server Service and the NetLogon Service (domain environments) for the user to have the ability to authenticate to this remote machine over the network. Remote Support also requires the Remote Registry Service for functions that require access to the Registry.

The Remote Registry Service is turned off by default in Windows Vista and later.

Com Control

For best results, SolarWindsrecommends that you update COMCTL32.DLL to version 4.71 or later. Dameware Remote Supportfunctions with older versions of Com Control but displays the following message:

This version of Remote Support requires a newer version of COMCTL32.DLL (Version 4.71 or later) than what is installed on this machine (Version x.xx). A newer version of this DLL can be obtained from Microsoft and is shipped with NT SP4 and IE 4.x or higher.

Where x.xx is the version of COMCTL32.DLL on the computer receiving this message.

COMCTL32.DLL is not re-distributable by third-party software developers, but you can download and install it from Microsoft.

Install Dameware Remote Support

  1. Go to
  2. In the Log In tab, enter your organization's SWID and your email address.
  3. In the Latest Downloads table, click Choose Download for the installation files for your product.

  1. Log in as an administrator to the server on which you are installing Dameware Remote Support.
  2. Run DamewareRS.exe.

As the installation progresses, a dialog box appears, prompting you to enter an email address. If you do not enter an email address, the installation does not complete.


  1. Click Next on the Welcome window.
  2. If you agree, accept the terms of the license agreement, and click Next.
  3. Select an installation directory, and click Next.
  4. Click Centralized Install, and click Next.


  5. Enter the IP address and port number of the Central Server, and click Next.

    The default port number if 6133, and is not often changed to another value.

    There is a known issue with Dameware where the Test button reports a failure to connect, even though the connection to the Central Server is valid. SolarWinds recommends that you click Next, and continue with the installation.


  6. Select your shortcut preferences, and click Next.
  7. Click Install.
  8. On the final dialog box, click Finish.

4. Connect to the Central Server

  1. Launch Dameware Remote Support.
  2. Select Windows authentication or complete the Dameware authentication credentials, and click Connect to Server.

    The first time you log in, you are presented with a self-binding certificate. Click Yes to proceed.


  3. To change the connection parameters, click Advanced settings.
