You can install DameWare in two different, mutually exclusive modes—standalone or centralized.

DameWare Versions 11.1 and higher provide a separate standalone installer for Remote Support and Mini Remote Control (available from the Customer Portal). You must request the centralized version from your SolarWinds sales representative. The centralized installers force you to specifically choose centralized mode during the installation process.

If you install DameWare Central Server, you must install Remote Support and Mini Remote Control in centralized mode. You cannot install both the use both Standalone and Centralized installations of DameWare.

Standalone

Standalone mode is the default installation type. Users who are upgrading or who have installed DameWare products before have installed pre-version 11 products in standalone mode. The standalone install type requires each product to be individually activated on each computer. It is most useful for organizations with a small user base or with small or decentralized IT departments.

Products installed in standalone mode do not require server equipment and cannot access Centralized features, such as global or personal host lists.

Centralized

Centralized mode is available for versions 11.0 and above. This mode requires you to install and deploy at least one server component—the DameWare Central Server. License activation occurs on the server level; you do not activate licenses on each computer with Mini Remote Control or Remote Support installed on it. Mini Remote Control and Remote Support users authenticate to the Central Server and can logon at any centralized Mini Remote Control or Remote Support installation. Centralized mode is most useful for organizations with a large user base, with large or centralized IT departments, or with multiple DameWare product licenses that you wish to manage from a single point.

Products installed in centralized mode can access Centralized features, such as the DameWare Internet Proxy or global host lists.
