Welcome to SolarWinds Storage Manager Version 6.0. Storage Manager leverages an intuitive point-and-click interface that provides a unified monitoring view of all the layers in your storage stack. By continuously scanning the network, Storage Manager provides storage performance data, automates storage capacity planning, maps VMs to physical storage and allows end-to-end visibility, making administration more efficient.

Storage Manager 6.0 comes with an additional feature called the Storage Resource Monitor Orion Module. The SRM Orion Module is a separate install and can be downloaded from your customer portal. The SRM Orion Module is a new native-Orion module that allows you to monitor, report and receive alerts on your SAN and NAS devices in a single window. The SRM Orion Module can be integrated with Storage Manager sharing the same license and allowing both product to run together. For more information, see "Introduction to Storage Resource Monitor."

New Features and Improvements

The SRM Orion Module Version 6.0 includes the following new features:

  • Alerts, monitors, and reports on SAN and NAS devices
  • Built on the SolarWinds Orion platform meaning you can run it with other SolarWinds products. For a list of compatible Orion modules, see“Compatibility with other SolarWinds Module”
  • Appstack environment enabled providing a complete picture of how your storage infrastructure, performance, and availability affect the rest of the application stack when used with other SolarWinds Appstack environment enabled products. For more information on the Appstack environment, see “Using the Appstack Environment Map to view your Storage Environment”
  • Support for the following storage devices:
    • EMC VNX / CLARiiON family
    • EMC VNX NAS Stand-alone Gateway / Celerra
    • Dell EqualLogic PS Series
    • NetApp E-Series (LSI)
    • IBM DS 3xxx / 4xxx / 5xxx
    • Dell MD3xxx
    • NetApp Filers running Data OnTAP 8 in 7-mode and Cluster-mode (aka Clustered Data OnTAP)
  • Users can create custom maps that provide a graphical depiction of their storage environment within the web console
  • Support for additional websites to ensure redundant access to the SRM web console through more than one webserver
  • Shared licensing when the two modules are integrated. The same array monitored in both modules counts once against the license count

Storage Manager Version 6.0 includes the following new features and improvements:

  • All fixes comprising of 5.7.2 and it's hotfixes
  • Refactored VMware data collection for improved performance and scalability. For full details, see "Storage Manager and vCenter Asset Collection."
  • Licensing integration changes to support running side by side with the SRM Orion Module

  • If you are upgrading to 6.0 and have not applied 5.7.1 HF1, the report “MDisk Group Performance” will only show performance data collected after the 6.0 upgrade. No data is displayed that was collected prior to the 6.0 upgrade. If you prefer to view “MDisk Group Performance” report data prior to the application of this upgrade, the “MDisk Group Performance –DEPRECATED” report must be used. This report can be found in “Quick Reports” and is also be available from “Scheduled Reports” and “My Reports.” If you prefer to have all data in a single report, contact SolarWinds support for assistance with migrating all old data to the new format.
  • If you have an IBM SVC device and you are upgrading to 6.0 without first installing 5.7.1 HF1, depending on the size of your Storage Manager database, delays may be experienced while upgrading. The installer wizard is present until the process has completed. Do not close the window until the process has completed.

Installing this Version

Warnings: SolarWinds suggests that you complete the following tasks before implementing any changes:

  • Ensure you have a backup copy of your Storage Manager server and data. SolarWinds recommends that you either to backup your database or create a snapshot of the entire server. For more information on backing up the Storage Manager database see "Backing up the Storage Manager Database."
  • The same hardware requirements apply to version 6.0 as previous versions. Additionally, you will must be running version 5.6 or higher before attempting to upgrade.
  • If you install Storage Manager onto an existing Storage Manager deployment, the installer will migrate your current Storage Manager server in place (all settings and history will be saved). Just execute the Storage Manager server installer on the Storage Manager server and it will find the current Storage Manager install and migrate the configuration and history.

New Installs

  • SolarWinds recommends that you do NOT install Storage Manager on the same server as the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager or any SolarWinds Orion product (NPM, SAM, SRM Orion Module, etc...)

Integration with Virtualization Manager

  • You must install Virtualization Manager version 6.2 or higher.

Integration with Orion-based products

  • This KB shows the compatibility of the SRM Orion Module with other Orion products

All installs and upgrades

  • Linux installations require the "libaio" library or the installation will fail. You can install the appropriate libaio package using the associated package manager for your distribution.
  • When using Windows 7 & 8, and Windows Server 2008 & 2012,(or Vista for evaluations only), UAC must be disabled for the duration of the upgrade (until after the configuration wizard completes).
  • If you need a temporary license to install an instance of the software in a lab, download an evaluation copy of the latest software from our website. Evaluation copies come with a fully functional 30-day license. Test the change in a lab environment that mimics your production environment.

Licensing this Version of Storage Manager

New licenses keys are required when installing Storage Manager 6.0. The license keys are available in your Customer Portal. SolarWinds recommends that you get your key from the Customer Portal before proceeding with the installation. If you do not find your key in the Customer Portal, contact our customer service team.

If you are upgrading from a release that is version 5.6.2 or newer, you can upgrade straight to Storage Manager 6.0.

To obtain your key

  • Login to your Customer Portal and select “License Management”
  • Navigate to Storage Manager v6.0 and look for the Activation Key
  • Copy your activation key to a safe place before continuing. You will need it after the upgrade completes.

License Deactivation

  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Storage Manager license, no deactivation is needed
  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Backup Profiler license key, prior to upgrading your Storage Manager server, you must deactivate your existing Backup Profiler license key before upgrading
    • If you wish to upgrade to Storage Manager 6.0 and still use Backup Profiler, SolarWinds recommends that you clone or migrate your current Backup Profiler install to a different server. Once Backup Profiler is on a different server, proceed to deactivate the Backup Profiler license on the original server and then upgrade to Storage Manager 6.0
  • Perform the following steps to deactivate your Storage Profiler or Backup Profiler license:
    • Click the "Settings” icon in the upper right corner of the Storage Manager Website
    • Click License Manager
    • Click Deactivate
Once the license has been deactivated, upgrade to Storage Manager 6.0 and apply your new license key.
  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Backup Profiler Evaluation license key, contact SolarWinds support for assistance before upgrading

License Enforcement

Storage Manager will enforce licensing during the upgrade. The installation will abort if any of the following conditions are detected:

  • Expired maintenance
  • Number of monitored disk exceeds the maximum allowed licensed disk count
  • Running Storage Manager with a Storage Profiler or Backup Profiler license

Applying a License with no Internet Access

  • If you are running Storage Manager version 5.7.2 or lower on a server that does not have internet access, after upgrading to Storage Manager 6.0, you must install a new version 6.0 license key. This can be done by downloading and activating your license offline via the customer portal. Failure to install a version 6.0 license key could cause web site slowness and data collection issues.

Licensing this Version of the SRM Orion Module

The SRM Orion Module uses the SolarWinds License Manager. This is a free utility that manages your SolarWinds Licenses. For complete instructions on licensing, see "Licensing the SRM Orion Module
