These release notes provide additional guidance for SolarWinds Alert Central (Alert Central) v1.0.

Introducing Alert Central v1.0

Alert Central v1.0 is a new, free SolarWinds product that helps you get the right alerts to the right people at the right time. The product focuses on timely, efficient on-call management and escalation. When an issue is time sensitive, it's a good candidate for Alert Central.

Core features include the following:

  • Alert centralization and escalation
  • Group-centric management with Active Directory integration
  • Multiple on-call calendars per group
  • Out-of-the-box, two-way integration with Orion alerting
  • Support for almost any third party and non-Orion source via email
  • Acknowledgement and escalation via both email and web interface
  • Advanced routing rules that let you create and edit routing policies based on alert/email properties
  • A weekly summary report with important statistics
  • A web user interface (UI) that, when connected to the Alert Central server,works in browsers and mobile devices
  • Plain text, rich text, and short text (for use with SMS) email templates

Alert Central deploys as a standalone virtual appliance. Anyone can download, install, and integrate it with SolarWinds and non-SolarWinds products. As long as your product sends emails and you want to route them to the right people, Alert Central will work for you.

Product Constraint Issues

Issue Description
Outlook reply-to notifications not processed.


If you are using Microsoft Exchange as your mail server, you must make sure all email sent to Alert Central is in plain text and not HTML. Alert Central can't understand HTML email from Microsoft Exchange. To circumvent this limitation, your Exchange Server administrator can force the mailbox into plain-text only mode:
  1. On the Exchange Server, open AD Users & Computers.
  2. Find the mailbox assigned to Alert Central and then open its properties page.
  3. Click the Exchange Feature tab.
  4. In the Protocols section, click IMAP4 or POP3, and then click Properties.
  5. Select the plain text option.
HMailserver error occurs


If you are using HMail as your mail server, it sometimes does not properly close the POP3 connection and results in the error Your mailbox is already locked. To fix the issue, you must restart HMail.
Users deleted in calendar background process.


The calendar does not keep users from being deleted in the background while you are adding on-call events. For example, an administrator may delete a user from Alert Central in their browser while you are trying to add on-call events for that same user in your browser. No error message displays when this happens, so be aware of this possibility.
Incorrect data appears in Time Picker.


Alert Central incorrectly allows you to enter invalid times and dates in the Time Picker dialog box on the Alerts page.

Username and User Creation Issues

Issue Description
Can create identical users


It is possible to create users with identical names and email addresses. Please do not do this.
Can create users with the same usernames.


Alert Central allows you to create two different users with the same username if one username uses uppercase letters and the other is in lowercase letters. Only one of those users is able to login.
Username spaces cause login problems.


Avoid creating usernames containing spaces. Usernames with spaces cannot log in to Alert Central.
User count is incorrect.


If you add a deleted user back to Alert Central, the counter at the bottom right incorrectly increases by 2 instead of 1. For example, the count may read Displaying 1 - 4 even though there are only 3 users displayed on the page.
Deleted user error occurs.


If a user is deleted from Alert Central, the user's profile page opens with an error from the Alert Details page.
Active Directory long username error occurs on import.


Alert Central cannot import Active Directory users or groups that contain fully-qualified LDAP paths longer than 255 characters.
Username is case sensitive in alert reassignment.


If you reassign an alert using the wrong case for the new assignee's username, the summary of the next email is Unable to reassign this alert (The user "XXX" was not found). Email reply reassignment is case sensitive, so you must use the correct case for the assignee's name. For example, if a username in Alert Central is greghenry, and you reassigned an alert to to GregHenry, Alert Central would be unable to find the username and reassign the alert to that user.

User Interface Issues

Issue Description
Navigation from the Alerts page not working properly.


Clicking the Back browser arrow from the Add New Source page takes you to the Alerts page. Clicking the Back browser arrow from the Add New Source page should take you to the Manage Sources page. This issue occurs only after you have navigated from the Manage Sources page to the Add New Source page.
Group Tab checkbox not working properly.


If you delete all groups from the Groups tab, the Select All checkbox will not work correctly until you press F5 to refresh the page.
Cursor does not always work properly.


When editing the contents of fields, the arrow keys on the keyboard sometimes need to be pressed more than once to move the cursor.
Blank Test Box Appears.


A blank test dialog box appears if you click Test in the Add A New Orion Source page before you fill in all the required fields. Dismiss the dialog box and fill in the remaining fields.
Browser differences cause inconsistent views.


The Alert Central Settings page has cosmetic differences if viewed using different web browsers.
Wrong group appears on Alerts page.


The wrong group appears on the Alerts page if you:
  1. Manually add a new alert.
  2. Select a specific group and user (example: Group-1 and User-1).
  3. Click Acknowledge & Assign and assign the alert to the same user in a different group (example: Group-2 and User-1).
Alert Details page has character limitations.


On the Alert Details page, the text in the Summary, Object, and Severity fields cut off and do not display properly when those fields contain more than 220 characters.
Can't exit Email Source page.


In the Alert Central Getting Started Wizard, you can’t exit the Add Email Source page when the Name field is empty. The issue applies to setting up both Orion and non-Orion sources. Click Back to exit the Add Email Source page.
Progress bars are missing.


Progress bars are missing from Alert Central, so you cannot tell how an action is progressing.
Incorrect alert assignment message appears.


If you try to reassign an alert by email and the user to whom you're assigning the alert doesn't exist, the reassignment fails. However, the Last Note of the case incorrectly reads Alert was re-assigned to Alert Central. And the response email incorrectly says Unable to acknowledge the alert., instead of Unable to reassign the alert.
Wrong time zone appears for on call event.


If you create an on-call event for a user and select the All days option, other Alert Central users who try to edit the on-call event in the Calendars tab will see the on-call time in your time zone, instead of in their local time zone.
On Call tab shows wrong or no username.


If the On Call Now tab shows a “name” instead of username or no name at all, press F5 to refresh the page.
Wrong page appears momentarily.


When you try to edit a user, the Add New User page appears for a few seconds before the Edit User page opens.
