Overview

This article describes how to resolve an issue where email actions are configured properly but the trap emails are not being received.

These issues are sometimes the result of the following error:

 WARN  Error - Failed - Was unable to send email message.
EXCEPTION STACK: --> The server rejected one or more recipient addresses. The server response was: 501 5.1.3 Invalid address
 :  :    at Interop.cdosys.MessageClass.Send()

Environment

NPM version 11.5.3 or earlier

Cause

The mail server is rejecting one or more of the recipient email addresses in the email action.

Resolution

To troubleshoot issues with trap rules, check the TrapService.log file found in C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\Orion to help isolate the issue.  This log must be reviewed on the polling engine where the traps are being received.

  1. Open the Trap Viewer.
  2. Go to View and click Alerts/Filter Rules ...
  3. Edit the rule containing the rejected email action.
  4. Remove all recipient addresses and add them back one by one to determine which address cause the problem.

Alternatively you can work with the team that manages your mail server to determine which address is being rejected.
