Protected service bouncing or failover stalls on Stopping a Service

Overview

When FoE is installed it handles the recovery settings (actions) of all protected services (i.e. Orion services) which may cause a conflict with the recovery options set by default in Windows.

Environment

  • FoE all versions

Cause

Windows resets settings (actions) to default values.

Resolution

  1. Open services.msc and open the properties of the affected service
  2. In the Recovery tab, set the recovery properties for that service to Take No Action

  3. Set the Startup type to Manual

  4. Restart FoE service

Notes:

  • This ensures that FoE does not fight with Windows when trying to stop services. If this is not setup correctly, the service may continuously restart (FoE stops the service then Windows restarts it), preventing failover.
  • Complete this resolution for all FoE protected services, on both the primary and secondary servers.
