APM 1.0 Release Notes

SolarWinds Application Performance Monitor (APM) powered by AppOptics is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)-delivered product that extends the application monitoring capabilities of SolarWinds SAM. It delivers advanced performance metrics for IIS-based, .NET applications that are integrated into the SAM experience.

You can use SolarWinds APM to cross-reference application, server, and infrastructure metrics side-by-side in the same dashboard, and trace requests through your entire application and infrastructure. APM also includes heat maps to isolate outliers and trends, which you can use to drill down to traces for root cause.

Adding this extra layer of information to the Orion Platform enables you to:

  • Gain a code-level look into your AppInsight for IIS applications.
  • Monitor the performance of custom IIS-based, .NET applications.
  • Check the status of application stacks and see how tiers of applications communicate with each other.
  • Determine the databases and users that applications send information to.
  • Identify if issues are network-, server-, or application-related so you can route details to the right team.

APM integration can be added to any IIS node being monitored by AppInsight for IIS in SAM.

Get started

To get up and running with SolarWinds APM, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure SolarWinds SAM 6.7 is installed.
  2. In the Orion Web Console, navigate to Settings > All Settings.
  3. Under Product Specific Settings, click APM Deployment Summary.
  4. On the APM Deployment Summary page, click Add.

If you already have an APM account, click Go to APM Login. Log into AppOptics, navigate to Settings > API Tokens, click the clipboard icon next to a token, and then paste the token into the Add an Integration wizard.

  6. On the Log In page, provide information for your new account and click Sign Up.

  7. On the Select Nodes page, select the IIS node(s) you want to integrate with APM.

If no nodes appear, check that AppInsight for IIS is configured correctly on the target server. See Configure AppInsight for IIS on nodes and Troubleshoot AppInsight for IIS.

  8. Click Deploy.

The Orion Platform deploys agents to nodes and restarts IIS services on remote machines. (You may be prompted to restart IIS services, depending on your configuration.)

APM performance metrics begin to appear in widgets such as IIS Pools with APM Data and Top IIS Pools. It may take a few minutes for IIS services to start communicating data to the Orion Web Console.
