McAfee / Skyhigh Secure Web Gateway nodes display "Unknown" Vendor and Machine Type in SolarWinds Platform (NPM)

McAfee Skyhigh Secure Web Gateway (e.g., WBG-5500-E, sysObjectID 1.3.6.1.4.1.59732.2.7.1.1) shows Unknown Vendor and Unknown Machine Type even though SNMP polling and OID/MIB resolution work correctly. This is caused by the sysObjectID not being mapped in the SolarWinds device classification table (SWISysObjects), which is separate from the MIB database. Updating MIBs does not fix Machine Type. Use a custom Node Details poller as the workaround and submit the sysObjectID for inclusion in a future release. Search terms: McAfee unknown machine type, Skyhigh unknown vendor, Secure Web Gateway unknown device, sysObjectID not recognized, Orion unknown vendor SNMP.

Overview

McAfee Skyhigh Secure Web Gateway devices are discovered and polled correctly over SNMP, but the node continues to display Vendor and Machine Type as "Unknown."

Exact field values observed on the affected node:

  • Machine Type: Unknown

  • Vendor: Unknown (generic/unknown vendor icon)

  • System OID (sysObjectID): 1.3.6.1.4.1.59732.2.7.1.1

  • System Description: Skyhigh Secure Web Gateway 7.0;WBG-5500-E;McAfee, Inc.

The device is Up, SNMP is working, the MIB browser resolves the OID to the correct MIB object, but the node classification never updates and the device keeps showing an unknown vendor/machine type.

This article explains:

  • Why a correctly polled SNMP device still shows "Unknown" Machine Type/Vendor.

  • The difference between the MIB database and the device classification (sysObjectID) database.

  • The supported workaround to display the correct values now.

  • The escalation path to get the device recognized automatically in a future release.

Cause

Vendor and Machine Type are resolved from the device classification table (sysObjectID-to-device mapping, delivered in 50_SWISysObjects.sql / SWISysObjects), which is a separate database from the MIB database (MIBs.cfg).

The sysObjectID 1.3.6.1.4.1.59732.2.7.1.1 is not present in the device classification table in the affected release, so the platform cannot map it to a vendor/model and displays "Unknown."

Key distinction:

  • The MIB database is used for OID browsing, custom pollers (UnDP), and traps. Updating it does not change Machine Type/Vendor.

  • The device classification (sysObjectID) database drives Vendor/Machine Type and is updated only through product releases/updates.

A prior submission for this exact OID was processed as a MIB update, which is why the OID resolves in the SMIB browser but the Machine Type still shows Unknown.

Resolution

Workaround (displays correct values in the current version)

  1. Go to Settings > All Settings > Manage Pollers.

  2. Click Create New Poller and select technology type Node Details.

  3. Set Vendor to define manually: McAfee (or Skyhigh).

  4. Set Machine Type to define manually: Skyhigh Secure Web Gateway WBG-5500-E (or use data source 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2 = sysObjectID).

  5. Save and assign the poller to the affected node(s).

  6. Select the node and click Poll Now / Scan Now to apply the values.

Machine Type or Vendor is not detected, incorrect, missing or unknown via SNMP in SolarWinds Platform

Permanent fix (automatic recognition)

The sysObjectID must be added to the device classification table (50_SWISysObjects.sql) by Engineering and is delivered in a future release/update.
