Question:

Can I import nodes from Orion into Cirrus?

Resolution:

Yes.

There are detailed instructions on how to import devices from an Orion NPM database in the Cirrus Administrator's Guide, Chapter 3: Managing Devices in the section called Importing Devices. There are screen shots and information on how to set up a Windows job to update the NCM database with Orion nodes daily. That information is summarized below.

This procedure requires NCM v5.1 or later.

Creating a Windows job to update the NCM database daily

  1. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion Network Configuration Manager.
  2. Click Schedule on the menu bar, and then click Create New Job.
  3. Select Import Devices from Orion Database as the type of job, and then click Next.
  4. Name the job, and then click Next.
  5. Specify a schedule for the job. Scheduling options are governed by the limitations of the Windows Job Scheduler.
  6. Enter a Windows account under the context of which you want to run the job. Ensure you understand the warnings on this screen, and then click Finish to customize the job.
  7. Confirm the schedule and that the job is enabled on the General tab of the new window.
  8. Select the Import tab, and then specify the location and credentials necessary to access the Orion database. Fill in all fields, and then click Next.
  9. Select the columns to import. The information at the top of the screen explains this step. Click Next.
  10. Select which devices to import, and then click Next. All devices are selected by default to make the process easier to automate.
  11. Specify whether you want to import only new nodes or import devices from Orion that already exist in NCM. When you are ready, click Finish.

You are now finished. You can click the OK button to close this window or you can browse the other tabs to confirm the information you've added. The job will run as scheduled and will bring new Orion nodes into the NCM database.
