Question:

Why do I receive an "Unrecognized Database Format" error message when I attempt to perform maintenance on my Network Performance Monitor database?

Resolution:

Your Network Performance Monitor database may be corrupt. You can corrupt the database if you do not follow proper shutdown procedures for either Windows or the Network Performance Monitor.

To repair a corrupt database:

1. Close the Network Performance Monitor tool.

2. In Windows Explorer, browse to your SolarWinds Toolset program directory.

Toolset VersionToolset Directory
Version 2001C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\200X Engineers Edition
Version 5, 7, or 8C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Engineers Edition
Version 9 or laterC:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Engineer's Toolset

3. Run the database maintenance program located in your Toolset directory.

Toolset VersionFile Name
Version 7 or laterDatabase-Maint.exe
Version 6 or earlierNetPerfMon-Maint.exe

4. Select Compact and Repair, and then click Run Job.

If your database is still corrupt, complete the following procedure:

1. Close the Network Performance Monitor tool.

2. Run Microsoft Access 2003.

3. From the Tools menu, point to Database Utilities, and then click Compact and Repair Database.

4. In the Database to Compact From dialog box, browse to your Toolset directory.

5. In the File name box, enter SWNetPerfMon.cfg and then click Compact.

6. In the Compact Database Into dialog box, enter SWNetPerfMon.mdb

7. If the repair is successful, delete the old SWNetPerfMon.cfg file, and then rename the repaired SWNetPerfMon.mdb file to SWNetPerfMon.cfg

If your database file is still corrupt, it may be beyond repair. Complete the following procedure to start fresh from a new database:

1. In your Toolset directory, rename the SWNetPerfMon.cfg file to SWNetPerfMon.cfg.old

2. Restart Network Performance Monitor.
